Crystal O Experience

This is a user experience by a real CultureCat user, Crystal O.

Being a second generation Latina, I feel like there is so much that I need to hold on to and yet there is a lot to learn! Part of the reason I joined CultureCat is to keep my traditions alive in my life. I want to show other people that Latinos are more than faces passing on the street or pop culture icons. There is life and heart in our traditions.

When I started teaching classes, I shared some of my mother’s recipes that I love. Every time I prepared a meal for a small group of users, I felt like I was passing on a piece of my family that everyone could appreciate. Just the act of cooking, even with strangers, makes people naturally want to get talking, interact, ask questions, and explore more about the origins of those foods. Now I teach cooking classes in addition to Spanish for Travelers, and each class that goes by, I feel closer and closer to my cultural upbringing.

I plan on adding a few extra classes to the mix. I recently took a class with Enam and I thought it was amazing! He taught us about the Borborbor dance of Ghana. I felt like it was easy to connect to people in my workshop because music and dance is so important in an afro-caribbean culture like Puerto Rico’s, and it just made me want to keep dancing. He definitely is inspiring me to take on Salsa Lessons, while I continue to learn more about Ghana and their own dance styles.

Sometimes l log on, and I never know what I’ll find! I wonder what I’ll be shaking to next month?
